Religion-politics mix gives rise to fear

Naomi Schalit Kennebec Journal & Morning Sentinel
Monday, January 07, 2008

I grew up in a household where among our many guests were older people with tattooed numbers on their arms. They spoke with accents -- Polish, German, French.

These were friends of my parents who had survived Nazi concentration camps -- the Holocaust -- and lived to tell their stories. And what they spoke of, over and over again, was the danger that comes when government dictates which religion is good and which religion is not (and thus which religion's adherents are good or bad).

They had lived in countries where the very fact that you were a Jew meant you couldn't hold certain jobs, live in certain areas, attend certain schools -- where, ultimately, in its most horrific manifestation, being a Jew meant you were targeted for death.

I lived in a household where the memory and evidence of that Holocaust was directly and powerfully linked to the belief that America was a safe place because this country clearly separated religion and the state.

CHESTER Zoo staff jumped to it on New Year's Eve to highlight the plight of frogs worldwide.

Zoos across the world united at 11am for a giant, simultaneous leapfrog marking the launch of a campaign.

2008 has been declared the Year of the Frog to raise awareness of a looming, mass extinction of amphibian species – the most significant since the dinosaur.

One third to one half of all amphibian species are in danger of disappearing in our lifetime. Amphibian Ark is a campaign supported by zoos to rescue the most endangered 500 species that cannot be saved in the wild.

I snitched this from [info]sapphoq

a) why you came to CommieJournal*

Well, let's see, I've never heard of it before I commented on one of sapphoq's posts. I hate being an anonymouse sooo here I am :P

b) what you frequently post about in your own journal*

Just about anything that catches my interest. I may agree with the info, opinion or whatever and I may not. It's just something that caught my eye, or I found on the net or in the news. Could be a video, or an article, poems or a fan fic rec. A have wide and varied interests. Fic Recs, jeesh there's really too much to list. I am however a rabid, anti fundamentalist, anti dominionist, I hate censorship, I believe in personal responsibility, So I post things along those lines when I can fnd them. I tend to post sappy sentimental stuff sometimes, and blinkies for BD's and Holidays and such. Every onece in a ehile I'll post a meme  or quiz that I find amusing, this one for example ;>, Sometimes I post raunchy jokes.

c) your top fandoms*

Oh Lordy, that's a hard one, because I read a lot of different fic, heh.

Hmm, okay I'll give it a shot:

BTVS, ATS, The Sentinel, Due South, Star Gate, Once a Thief, Riddick fic.

And I do read good:

Fast and Furious, Harry Potter sometimes,

d) what you do for fun*

I read, LOL.  I cook and bake, I read and write fan fic, I read Fandom Wank articles, LOL. I listen to alternative news talk radio, I visit Alien earth.com and that place is a hoot. The lady that owned godlike productions has set up this new website/forum. It's kinda wild and crazy there. I keep up with news on all kinds of subjects, and watch videos. I'm a movie fanatic. I listen to wide and varied types of music. I post on my journals, and collect icons.

I think that's enough?

e) what sort of friends you are looking for*

Hey, it's all good as long as they respect me and themselves. I find people of varied interests and backgrounds to be intensely interesting.

Just a note though, if you're sneaky, or backstabbing or a liar or that kind of thing just pass me on by. I don't need the drama. I am blunt, and I don't usually pull my opinions.  Sometimes I don't get it down exactly right but people that know me usually get my meaning or they ask before they jump off the deep end, LOL. I get a lot of flack for that, but, thet's what I think or feel or believe. I respect the rights of everyone to have their opinion and I expect the same in return. I may not agree with everything you say, and you may not agree with everything I say, but we can agree to disagree. Nature shows us that there is room for a wide variety of differences and they can blend in harmony as long as there is respect for other members. I have a tendency to soapbox about my pet peeves, and a tendency to fall into lecture mode sometimes. LOL, that is a holdover from my nursing days and doing patient teaching on a huge variety of health stuff. I practice natural remedies, the ones that I have found that work, as much as I can, but I am not rabidly anti medicine.

Okay I think that's enough about me :P
