Calling CommieJournal sponsors [May. 6th, 2008|09:54 am]
[Tags|]

So after I read this post, I was quite alarmed. I mean, I knew that the site wasn't doing that well financially, but I wasn't quite aware on the severity.

So an idea came to me: what about having CommieSponsors?

I know, not everyone can afford a paid account, or $1. Frankly, I've just been umemployed for 6 months, and I come from a country where there's no unemployment benefits or welfare. Failure to work = no income at all = find a way to fend for yourself without breaking the law. So I definitely can empathise with people who cannot afford to shell money out, not even the $1.

However, now that I've found work, I'm actually able to contribute a bit more. And I intend to do just that. I'm putting in $10 each month, towards hosting costs. If the server hosting as mentioned if $169 per month, and we can get 17 people to commit to a one-year plan of $10 per month (that's $120 per person per year), we will be able to guarantee hosting for one year (while others chip in whenever they can to help towards hosting).

CommieJournal is a dream. It is a hope that freedom of speech over the internet will not be curtailed, just as America was the land of dreams for many many decades ago. We made it once; I know we can make it once again.

If you are willing to be one of the 17 committed sponsors for a year (only a year; if after a year the site is still not able to pay for itself, then maybe we should consider giving it up, since it's not fair to you to keep pouring money for others to use it unless you want to), then please, take the effort. Be one of that 17, and we will know that the site wil run for one more year.

If you want to join in, perhaps you can consider commenting here, or emailing the site owners [info]shamangirl or [info]nebris to tell them that you're a part of the plan, and they can see how it pans out?

Thanks for taking the time and effort to read this, and for considering being a part of this project.
