Random Thoughts on Chinga and Duma Key...

This is going to be one of my rambling, fangirl posts. So strap in.

This all started rather randomly when I read that Katherine Isabelle (Ava from Supernatural) was in an X-Files episode ("Schizogeny"), and it happened to be one for which I have the DVDs. So I was rewatching that (incidentally the guy that played Ash was in that episode, too), and guess what other episode was on that disk? "Chinga"! The one written by Stephen King. I hadn't seen it in ages, so I watched it next.

Mind you, when this episode originally aired, I was not only a rabid X-Phile, but I was also an insatiable Stephen King fan. I still am... but you get the point. When I heard these two things were going to collide, I was fangirling like a spaz, and this was before I even knew the term "fangirl". My expectations were really high, and this was also before I'd learned not to do that to myself. So of course it didn't live up to my intense freak-out, and I walked away disappointed. For a few reasons I'm about to explain.

It was very Scully-centric. Now while I love both characters, Mulder always has been my favorite, and rather than write him properly, King took the opportunity to make Mulder look like a pathetic sack... Which is funny, but at the time, I didn't find it that amusing. I still think it was over-indulgent of King's inside jokes with Duchovny when really he should have been trying to please an audience, not his own sense of humor. Secondly... it wasn't scary. I have never been frightened by the evil doll scenario, which is all "Chinga" was. Evil doll on a rampage. Spare me, honestly. Now I don't know what I expected... For Pennywise to come driving up in Christine with Randall Flagg riding shotgun and Cujo in the backseat? At the very least, I wanted better than an evil doll. One which was obviously evil with tons of telltale signs, yet they still kept blaming the mother and her daughter for all the craziness that ensued. Right until the very end of the episode, that is. The final "fight" was anticlimactic to say the least, with the doll getting nuked in a microwave.

Okay, so the disappointment lingers on, even today. But when you hear about Stephen King writing an X-Files episode, you should be blown the fuck away by the finished product! Right!? Not left asking why this was so dull and unimaginative. Which leads me to say that no one should expect even a bestselling author to come onto an established show, one with its own mythology and characters they've never written before, and have it be the best thing in the universe. Stephen King achieved what most fans would die for: his fan fic got filmed. That's about it. And I'm not going to kick him around for that, because trying to tell a story in less than an hour under the circumstances I just described is kind of impossible if you don't do it for a living. That's why I admire shows like The X-Files and Supernatural, that pull it off so damn well and make it look so damn easy.

Anywho, it's the doll's origins that lead me into Duma Key. Polly, the creepy girl who owns said doll, was given it after her father, a fisherman, pulled it from the water one night. He was going to take it home to his daughter when he was killed, seemingly at random, by a hook on the boat. Since then, Polly has carried this doll, and weird shit keeps cropping up. Sounding familiar? Elizabeth's father gave her a china doll (her fair salvage) that was among the wreckage she'd created for him to weed through. Then it turned out to have an evil entity using it as a conduit to manipulate her. So in essence, Duma Key feels like "Chinga" done right. With an evil doll included in the plot but not dominating it. An odd conclusion to come to maybe, but one I've reached, nonetheless.

Also, I'm nearly done with the novel. Not entirely there yet but close. Edgar has discovered the power his paintings have, as Tom Riley and Dr. Kamen are both dead now. Tom... I wasn't as upset about. It was really disheartening that he was on his way back up when it happened, but he'd been more of a nuisance throughout the book than anything. Kamen... now that was harsh. He was such an awesome guy! Now I'm terrified for Ilse, because Edgar doesn't seem to recall that she does have a drawing. And if that doesn't do it, then he still has the one he drew of her shithead boyfriend, and that might have enough spark in it to start something bad... *whimpers* And of course, because Wireman is so insanely kickass, I know he's not long for this world. :(

Myth and Legend...

I found a cool page for Robin Hood related whatnots! The Legend of Robin Hood. There is a LOT there, all of it worth reading, but let me point out a couple of especially interesting parts.

For instance, the "God of the Witches" and "The Horned God" portions, which both made me go WTF but are no less interesting. Apparently, they are just some people reaching, trying to make Robin Hood out to be a pagan, nature-worship figure and taking it too far. They related him to a fawn or a stag-like god of the woods, worshiped by witches of the time.

In her highly controversial and now discredited book The Witch Cult in Europe, and its sequel, God of the Witches, anthropologist Margaret Murray proposed that paganism did not die out with the Christianization of Europe, but instead, practitioners of what she called the "Old Religion" retreated in secret into the woods at night to continue their ancient rituals. Murray suggested that the witch craze in Europe was an attempt by the Church to eradicate these last vestiges of the earlier nature religions.

Murray claimed that the deity worshiped in these cults was a horned woodland god that dated back to Paleolithic hunting cultures, whom the medieval Church equated with Satan.

For Murray, the legend of Robin Hood was a veiled reference to the medieval witch cult, in which "Robin Hood" was one of the names for the leader of a coven, who was considered both priest and incarnate god.

Oooookaaaaay... This other is a little better. A lot less "conspiracy theory" oriented.

Although Margaret Murray's theory was obviously flawed, resting as it did on errors of fact and faulty assumptions, the depiction of Robin as a horned nature deity is still compelling. Following Murray, Robert Graves rather cryptically argued for the identification of Robin as a stag-antlered deity:

"It seems likely that Llew's [a Celtic sun god] medieval successor, Red Robin Hood was also once worshiped as a stag. His presence at the Abbot's Bromley Horn Dance would be difficult to account for otherwise, and 'stag's horn' moss is sometimes called 'Robin Hood's Hatband'. In May, the stag puts on his red summer coat."

They also equate him with a trickster, like Puck!

Because of the similarity in name, Robin Hood is often thought to be a manifestation of Robin Goodfellow, the mischievous hobgoblin also known as Puck. Jacob Grimm apparently noted the close association of the two Robins, but did not elaborate upon it.

Robin Hood is clearly a trickster figure, and may have indeed taken on attributes associated with Robin Goodfellow. He is often content to publicly humiliate a foe, rather than kill him. Moreover, he is a master of disguise and enjoys misleading his enemies.

*heart swells*

The information supplied about Maid Marian is great, as well.

Marian represents the Goddess in her maiden aspect. According to Robert Graves, the name "Marian" is a variant of "Mare", one of the most ancient names for the Lady, dating back thousands of years to ancient Egypt, Sumeria and Minoan Crete. In his masterpiece of mythological interpretation, The White Goddess, Graves equates Maid Marian with the goddess of the sea and sensuality, variously known as Mari, Miriam, Mariamne, Myrrha, Marina and Mary Gipsy. This goddess was Christianized as both St. Mary of Egypt and the Virgin Mary.

Graves suggests that the name "Maid Marian" is a sort of cultural pun on the term 'mermaid' (literally, "maiden of the sea"), also formerly written 'merry-maid'.

I love the religious overtones of this, since my Robin is Catholic. I also squeed at the mermaid references. *glances at Ghani* ;) And check out this beautiful painting of Mermaid!Marian and Robin:

It goes on to say some even more insightful things about her that I loved:

Despite the limited acceptable social roles for mediaeval women, Marian is not disparaged in the Robin Hood ballads for following her lover Robin into the Greenwood and living the life of an outlaw, as the only woman among a band of men. As the maiden aspect of the Goddess, Marian is simultaneously slut and virgin, expressing her sexuality outside patriarchal norms of morality and choosing her own lover, yet remaining autonomous and unsubordinated. Her strong, unconventional character is made clear in the ballad of Robin Hood and Maid Marian.

[...]

Although Marian appears in very few of the surviving ballads, she is central to the legend. Even where Marian is absent, it is apparent that Robin is inherently the consort of the Goddess in her maiden aspect. In the Christianized versions, Robin is devoted to the Virgin Mary and follows a code of chivalry, never harming a woman.

And it draws parallels between Robin Hood and Peter Pan! EEEEEEEE!

In their eternal youth and freedom from responsibility, Robin & Marian remind us of a similar couple in a later legend: Peter Pan & Wendy. Indeed, Never Never Land is a sort of idealized Sherwood, and the The Lost Boys are juvenile equivalents of the Merry Men.

As Peter Pan, the Edwardian derivative, Robin returns to his roots as a fey being from a magical realm, albeit now as an immature boy, stripped of the strong overtones of sexuality inherent in the adult figure of Robin Hood, despite his evocative surname.

Robin Hood has inherent sexuality? Look who's asking this... Of course he does! :p

BIRD ATTACK!

No kidding, I got attacked by a bird. Apparently, it thought I was a threat, because this little, brown bird swooped down on me and attacked the back of my head. It was beating its wings and squawking... So I batted it away, and it hit the ground. I was walking Darla at the time, so she crouched down immediately and started batting at it. It flew off, and she was jumping against the leash trying to fly after it. I swear to God, the look on her face was like, "you can pull birds out of your hair!? You're magical!" Holy shit, that was random!

Stephen King Meme

My icon is so sad... but it's the only King-related icon I have over here. It just so happens to be my favorite quote from Desperation, too. Anywho, I got this meme from a King community on LJ, but I didn't feel like answering it over there.

1. What is your all time favorite Stephen King work (full-length novel, novella, short story, whatever)?

My answer to this will probably always be The Dark Tower Series. It truly was inspired, and it's easy to see why it was his lengthiest work. A lot of blood, sweat, and tears obviously went into crafting that world and those characters, and I, for one, am appreciative.

2. What is your favorite SK novel?

The prize for best standalone novel goes to IT. Not only was it good enough to make me read that 1138 page monster, but I got so emotionally invested that I bawled like a baby at the end. Not to mention the nightmares I endured... Pennywise haunted my dreams several times during the process, and I actually put it down too many times to count. Wow, is it starting to confuse anyone as to why I chose this as my favorite? Seriously. Best book EVER.

3. Favorite short story/novella collection?

Skeleton Crew! It also has the best cover of all time, with the evil monkey holding the cymbals.

4. Favorite novella?

The Mist. I think most people answer this question with The Mist, because it was that damn good.

5. Favorite short story?

Gyah, it keeps changing. They're all good... As much as there were scarier and more entertaining stories, I'm gonna pick the one nobody ever chooses: "Nona". For some reason, that story struck a chord with me, and I freaking loved it.

6. Favorite audiobook?

I don't listen to audiobooks.

7. Favorite movie based on King's work?

First, you always have to be willing to accept a King movie with all its flaws. So I tend to like most of them, in spite of how other fans may feel. I'll say Secret Window. And not just for the Johnny Depp factor, but because I preferred the movie ending to the book ending! How unheard of! :p

8. Is there a recurring theme in his work that you particularly enjoy (such as: main characters from one novel appearing briefly in another, objects that prove to be portals into another dimension, references to the Dark Tower)?

The fact that his main characters tend to be writers. I like seeing these things happen from the perspective of someone creative. Maybe because it helps me relate more, or maybe because their point of view is so interesting. Either way, I'm one of those people who would never mock him over how often he pulls a writer out of his character bag. ;)

9. What was the first Stephen King book you ever read? Was that the one that got you hooked on his writing, or did you need more convincing?

Four Past Midnight, particularly "The Langoliers". I was thirteen, that terrible age where you don't want to play with toys, but you haven't decided yet what you're supposed to be into instead. I was playing Mortal Kombat 3 all the time, started watching X-Files, had a rising interest in horror flicks... So I guess my fate was already sealed. But it was Danielle who handed me the book and promised it would be like nothing I'd ever read before. She was right. And I've been reading his stuff ever since. You know what did it? The line that said something like (paraphrasing) she looked at him like he shit diamonds from a platinum asshole. I laughed until I cried, and there was no turning back. What a weird thing to make you want to read everything someone's ever written, but that's me.

10. Is there one of his works in particular that sticks with you no matter what (not necessarily a favorite, but one that you can't get out of your mind)?

Almost all of his works I've read deserve this award. Though in some cases, it's crappy decisions he made that I still wish could be rectified. Like how he killed off Thad Beaumont in Bag of Bones, like a goddamn afterthought. WTF, Stephen? He was one of my favorites! Ahem. Sorry.

11. Have you read any of the nonfiction works (Danse Macabre, On Writing, that one about baseball)? If so, what did you think of them?

I haven't read the baseball one, but... I don't like sports. Come on, we get enough of him jerking off over the Red Sox in every other book, don't we? ;) I tease. Seriously, I've read every, other nonfiction work he's written, and I loved them. But I like his voice, I like what he has to say, and I find myself agreeing a lot. I imagine it's not for everyone, but it certainly feels like it's for me.

12. If you were a character in one of his works, which book/story would you most like to be in?

Dark Tower! OMG, please!? Can I? Huh huh huh?

13. If you were a character in one of his works, how long would you last? If not until the end, in what gruesome manner would your character be killed?

All-World is a pretty fucked up place, so not long unless I hooked up with a gunslinger. Hook up with a gunslinger... oh sweet Lord, YES! WANT! As to how I'd die? There is no "good" way to die in those books. Could I get fucked to death by Eddie? Or maybe I fuck Eddie and Susannah shoots me! I would take my medicine and go out with a smile on my face.

"Life Verse" - Robin and Tuck

Title: Life Verse
Author: Jade Blood
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: This version of Robin Hood is mine, though I definitely didn't create the legend.
Summary: Tuck delivers a much-needed message to Robin.

Whenever Tuck said he “wanted a word”, that meant that Robin should hop to and seek a more private atmosphere for the two of them to talk. Said talk could be as serious or as frivolous as whatever mood Tuck happened to be in, and that usually was directly proportionate to how much he’d had to drink. Today, he was sober, which meant the conversation would lean toward more serious than usual.

Robin’s shelter was just beyond where they stood, and the spot was secluded enough that Tuck wasn’t dragging him any farther. He’d already pulled Robin out of bed, making an early riser out of him when he’d barely slept all night. It wasn’t in Robin to complain, not just out of weariness but because Tuck was one man he’d never fuss about. Men like Tuck came once an age, and Robin wasn’t about to run him off with silly grievances.

“What can I do for you this morning?” Robin asked and scratched the back of his head. His mouth stretched in a yawn, and he waved a hand as if trying to explain without words that Tuck had not already bored him.

“It’s what I can do for you,” Tuck smiled softly. “I’ve given it a great deal of thought, prayed over it…”

Robin eyed him carefully, leaning on one arm against a nearby tree. “That worries me. Prayer usually means there’s something wrong.”

“Not in this case,” Tuck chuckled softly. “More just a… riddle I couldn’t solve until this morning. And with the answer before me, I wonder why it never came sooner.”

“Now I have to know what this is about,” Robin laughed. “As usual, you’ve mystified me, Friar.”

Tuck gave him a rueful smile, as if to say he knew undue flattery when he heard it. He planted his hands on his hips with an air of importance, like a king about to announce a great decree, then blew a long breath. “All right, son… I’d been thinking for some time, since this all began, that you needed something to… bolster you, if you gather.”

“Not certain I do,” Robin muttered.

“Something you could always turn to,” Tuck emphasized, clasping his hands together, then opening them palms up to the sky. “The voice of God to remind you what this is for, what it means.”

“You mean our…” He gestured around him, to the far corners of the encampment that was already beginning to stir as the sun broke through the leaves. “…The war, mission, choose what name you will? I know that, Tuck, what it’s for. For the poor. To stop Prince John. It’s all I ever think of.”

“But you’re just a man,” Tuck reminded him, lifting his index finger and wagging it slightly. “A man with a big heart and the best of intentions, but so have been many who turned villain. It’s the Lord’s guidance that has kept you honest even in a dishonest trade, and I believe it is that which will keep you on the path. But you must look to Him.”

“I do,” Robin said and his voice dipped a shade lower. He didn’t speak of these things with anyone but Tuck, and even then it made him feel exposed. “I pray everyday. I’m merely a tool in His hand, and I realize that.”

“I don’t doubt you, lad,” Tuck smiled, and his hand came down solidly on Robin’s shoulder. “But I’ve seen this world break men, strong men… I only want to strengthen your armor against such devils.”

There was no helping the smile that surfaced on Robin’s face even as he surrendered to Tuck’s wisdom. “Then let’s have it.”

“You won’t be disappointed,” Tuck grinned. “The Lord hit the mark with this one, son. You're not the sort who has time for ruminating on the Bible and its mysteries. I understand that. I believe that’s why the Lord sent me to you.”

Robin wanted to argue that this was only one of a million reasons Tuck was in his life, but it wouldn’t to do interrupt him when he was reaching his point.

“I wanted a verse for you,” Tuck explained. “But the word of God is… well, it’s dense. Teeming with so much that is so damned applicable, boy!” He gestured wildly, and Robin was then convinced the man should have a congregation. How he would enliven them. “I charged myself with the task of finding the one that would be all you’d need to hear, and the Lord led me right to it.”

“Out with it, man!” Robin laughed. “Let’s hear it!”

“John 15:13,” Tuck smiled, pressing a hand over his heart. “‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.’”

They stood together, Robin still leaning and Tuck still holding a hand over his heart in a bizarre salute. When Robin’s lips parted but no sound came, they both understood just how accurately a hit it had been. Robin’s heart was a bull’s-eye, and the center had been soundly pierced.

“That’s…” Robin swallowed, and his fist clenched and loosened.

“Memorize it,” Tuck ordered in a whisper. “Never forget it. Put it in that spot I know feels all raw and open right now, and don’t ever lose it.”

“Yessir,” Robin heard himself say.

“What was it, lad?”

“John 15:13. ‘Greater love hath no man than this…’”

Tuck nodded and joined him, “‘That a man lay down his life for his friends.’ Very good.” He sighed as though exhausted, and Robin could see for the first time that he’d lost sleep over this task. “It’s everything, isn’t it?”

“To me, it is,” Robin agreed and concern flashed in the green of his eyes. “You didn’t have to--”

“Ah, rubbish,” Tuck chuckled. “I smell breakfast at my back. Don’t wait all morning to eat. You’re already but a stick. You could shoot yourself off that bow.”

Robin cackled then watched him wander off. That man could tear him open and slap him back together like no one he’d ever known. Sometimes even he needed to be opened up, whether he liked it or not. He turned back to the shelter, muttering the words under his breath, prepared to make them a mantra before the day was out.

The End

Robin/Lily Proposal

I would have posted this as a comment, but it was too long. So much for a "drabble".

“So this is… what?” Lily asked, gesturing before her. There was a beautiful view laid out; the sun was setting, and even the smog had trouble ruining the loveliness of it. There were a couple of buildings, particularly the factory to her far left, that could have been Photoshopped out of the picture, and she wouldn’t have missed them. But that was so like Robin, wasn’t it? To pick something almost entirely beautiful but with flaws? “Detroit’s version of Makeout Point?”

Robin snorted and exited the car, crossing to her side to open the passenger door. “As close as Detroit gets,” he answered.

“And we’re not staying in the car?” she laughed, furrowing her brow and stepping out as though entering a dangerous cave. She peeked around and wouldn’t have moved forward if not for Robin taking her hand and pulling her around to the hood of the car. He lifted her and plopped her down on top, and Lily reacted instantly by trying to pull him down against her, legs and arms reaching to tangle around him. “Oh, I get it now…”

“Whoa, just a sec,” Robin chuckled. “Putting the cart before the horse, kiddo.” He pried himself free with some effort, smirking at her stubborn pout as he scooted up beside her, reclining against the windshield and sliding an arm around her waist.

“Now I’m confused,” Lily pointed out, and though her instinct was to snuggle in close, she stayed herself much to her own frustration. “Robin Locke is officially acting like a total prude, wanting to look at the sunset and possibly ruin the hood of this car in the process. I’m gonna need an explanation before I naturally assume that the real Robin is tied up somewhere… Oh, nice thought… And you’re some kind of double… Another nice thought. How do you feel about a threesome with two of yourself? Because I think that’s kind of a great idea.”

This drew a hearty belly-laugh from Robin, and Lily was pleased with herself but still mystified. Luckily, he calmed enough to speak. “I don’t know if I could swing that way even for myself, fine piece of ass that I am. Unless that’s just a kind of masturbation…?” He waved this off as if he couldn’t believe he was bothering with trying to wrap his head around it. “Anyway, can’t a guy be romantic?”

“Not you,” Lily grunted with a playful smirk.

“Oh, that stings,” Robin grinned back, then pulled her down into his arms since she was stalling so. “Fucking you senseless isn’t romantic?”

“It’s hot,” she agreed readily as she toyed with his collar, appearing to be fascinated with it when really she was trying not to meet his eyes at the moment. “But you might want to check the dictionary for ‘romance’ on that one.” She raised her eyes, and he could see the usual lust that she was trying to guard against him sensing. Maybe she was scared she was the one with no sense of romance? “Not that I ever said stop…”

“Mmm,” Robin replied with a lazy smile. “I think the words you tend to use are ‘more’ and ‘oh God, right there’.” He ran a hand over her hair as she giggled, resting her cheek against his shoulder and peeking out at the sunset over his chest. “But you know I love you, right?”

“Of course I do, stupid,” Lily snorted. “And I love you, too.”

“Good,” Robin nodded, then fished a box from his jacket pocket. “That’ll make this a pretty easy question to answer then.” He flipped it open with one hand and put it within her field of vision.

Lily casually glanced at the ring, then jerked back, staring down at it as if it were a snake. At first, Robin was ready to take this as a “no”, then she tore it roughly from his hands and brought it closer to her face. She eyeballed the jewel in the ring, then turned the stunned look on him.

“Where in great googly-moogly did you get this?” she asked breathlessly.

“I know a guy who knows a guy,” he shrugged. “How else?”

“Look at the size of that rock,” she laughed. “You sure you don’t want to feed the city with it? You know me, baby. I don’t need shiny baubles…”

Robin shook his head. “Well… It’s kind of a statement. About the sort of trouble I’d go to for you. So yeah, wear it. Just… watch your back with something like that on your hand in this town.”

Lily snorted as she pried the ring free and slid it over her finger. “Don’t I know it…” She pulled her hand back and gazed at the dying sun as it made orange and pink light dance across it.

“Uh…” Robin pushed himself into her field of vision. “Forgetting something?”

“Hmm?” she asked.

“Will you?”

“Oh yeah!” she crowed, then threw her arms about his neck and slammed him backwards, landing in a hale of messy kisses. He laughed and rolled with her, almost toppling off the car altogether. When she’d calmed, she grinned down at him and asked, “Putting on the ring wasn’t confirmation enough?”

“I’m a dense, thickheaded guy,” he reminded her. “I need clear, verbal answers to stuff like that.”

“Then, yes,” she giggled, leaning in for yet another kiss.

Movie Meme

*refuses to copy Ghani's answers*

1. One movie that made you laugh: Wedding Crashers. I dunno! It just did it for me!

2. One movie that made you cry: RENT. I sobbed like a child.

3. One movie you loved when you were a child: Innerspace! I was obsessed with that movie! I watched it ten times a day. Who would have thought a movie like that could capture a child's attention? Then again, I was weird from the start.

4. One movie you’ve seen more than once: There are lots of those. I think The Matrix might hold a record, though.

5. One movie you loved, but were embarrassed to admit it: I'm never embarrassed to admit to liking a movie, but I do like several that are NOT popular. Loved Ghost Rider, Hitchhiker's Guide, Unbreakable... oh wait, one? Sorry. :p

6. One movie you didn't like: What movie was I talking about just last night with Danielle? UltraViolet! That was it! Because not only was it the cliche chick-kicking-ass (so sad because I love Milla and wanted it to be better), but it was boring on top of that. Yeesh.

7. One movie that scared you: Cube. Even more than the violence, the psychological aspect is just incredible.

8. One movie that bored you: Golden Years. Technically, this was a TV miniseries, but I am counting it, because it is the longest, most entirely boring thing on the planet. I swear it was twelve hours long, at least. It's actually called Stephen King's Golden Years, and the fact that he, my personal hero, wrote this makes me want to sob in despair. It was bad. Really bad. I watched it only because Danielle and I were watching EVERY MOVIE back then, even more so if it sported King's name. We basically spent several hours talking over the movie and making fun of the dude's caterpillar mustache.

9. One movie that made you happy: Grindhouse. Seriously! I've never had more fun in a movie theater!

10. One movie that made you miserable: Pan's Labyrinth. By the time it was over, I wanted to shoot myself. Just ick.

11. One movie you weren’t brave enough to see: I agree with Ghani about the Saw movies. Not even Cary Elwes (*heart throbs*) could make me watch that. But I also want to cite the Hostel films. Anything torture-porn related is too much for me.

12. One movie character you’ve fallen in love with: SO MANY! Tony Stark will have to do. ;) TONY'S BALONEY PONY FTW!

13. The last movie you saw: In the theater, The Dark Knight. On DVD, The Eye.

14. The next movie you hope to see: Kaz wants to rent Penelope with me, because she said it was awesomely cute, so I think that will be it. :) The next theater movie that I am heavily anticipating is Watchmen, but I think Fox, in their huge suckitude, is going ruin any chance of that. *cries!!!!!*

SPIDER!

Spiders are fucking douche bags, okay? They're like evil, eight-legged ex-boyfriends. They show up at two in the morning, stumbling around and scaring the shit out of you... Seriously, why do they only come out right before you're ready to go to bed? What is the logic and/or justice in that? FUCKING HATE.

And this one? Was a big mother. By my standards anyway. Big and red and had spindlies sticking out of him (I don't think those were legs, because he wasn't walking on them), and he looked almost segmented into two halves. I have never seen a spider like this fucking thing before. Of course, I had to call in my usual backup: mom. Just thank God it decided to crawl its nasty ass back out from behind my entertainment center, or I'd be sleeping with mommy right now. Hell, I still might! That's how much this kind of thing freaks me out!

Mom squashed it with my sandal. It left a huge smear, too. GLACK! Bleh bleh bleh. Patooie.

Practically anything else could invade my room, and I would not get this scared. A cobra could slither in here, and I'd just whap it and run. Aliens, from the movie Aliens, could bust through the wall, and I'd be like, "awesome!" And the only thing that would make that better is if a Predator was right on its tail. Like literally riding its tail. I'd just manage to duck a few times and watch the show. Vampires and werewolves? I welcome that shit! Well, not even just compared to spiders, but... you get the idea.

Hey, maybe that's why Yancy is a douche! It all makes sense now... Speaking of, I don't know how I manage to love Anansi/Yancy so much when I can't abide spiders at all. I am confusing even to me.

It's impossible to score high on all of them, and a low score on one is just relatively low compared to the other virtues.

        YOUR VIRTUES

        60% Compassion

        44% Intelligence

        38% Humility

        44% Honesty

        0% Discipline

        43% Courage

        50% Passion

Take The Best Thing About You Test at HelloQuizzy

"Everyday Miracle" - Robin

Title: Everyday Miracle
Author: Jade Blood
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: This version of Robin is mine, as are Ruth and Kendall. Much is mentioned in passing, and she belongs to Ghani.
Summary: Saving the world one person at a time...

Most women in Ruth’s position might fear a shadow drawing near the door, but she knew that shape too well by now to find herself quaking. If anything, she was overjoyed. He’d not come in a month, and she would have worried after him had she not heard the stories. There was always the concern that he would die, either in battle or from those terrible conditions in the woods, while someone took up his mantle and carried his name, for often the legend would outlive the man himself. Yet he was sturdier than even she gave him credit for and loyal enough that it seemed no threat, no price on his head, could keep him away.

When he approached, she opened the door at once and ushered him inside. It simply wouldn’t do for him to get this far and be seen. The cold season had gripped Nottingham, and when she got a closer look under the candlelight, she saw he wasn’t bundled enough for it.

“Robin,” she hissed. “You’ll catch your death!”

“No, no,” he argued playfully, pushing his hood back and grinning with the sort of mercilessness that might sway her were she a younger woman. “The way I travel? I couldn’t possibly. I’m too quick for frost to catch me.”

“And modest, as well,” she replied with a dulled tone.

“How is she?” he asked and turned toward the furthest corner of the small enclosure. There was a lump there, one with a shadow that rose and fell gradually against the wall. “Any change?”

“Still has the cough, I’m afraid,” Ruth fretted, though he admired the strength it must have taken to keep from sounding worse. “But she soldiers on. Eats as much as I can give her. Says she’ll get better.”

“Brave as ever,” Robin smiled, then turned back with a sigh. “She looks to be sleeping.”

“Oh, wake her,” Ruth begged. “Please. She’d find the strength to kill me if she knew you were here and I’d let her sleep through it.”

He breathed a laugh, then reached under his cloak to pass her two, worn bags. “Money in one, herbs and medicines in the other. There’s a young… man among us who has a bit of a healing hand. When I told him of Kendall, he insisted I bring these along. There’s some kind of cream you rub on her chest that might clear her up, something else to put in tea…”

“I’ll sort it,” Ruth smiled, then moved away before the tears in her eyes could fall. “Go on now! I don’t want to take up anymore of her visit for myself.”

Robin nodded, then moved closer to the small bed where Kendall lay curled under a pile of rags that must serve as blankets in these harsh times. Her forehead gleamed, her cheeks red, but he didn’t dare move her covers. If Ruth had put them there, then that must mean she needed the warmth. He pressed the back of his hand against her face and felt that she was too hot for comfort, worse than when he’d last been by. It pained him, that those pale, green eyes should be so often shut, that bright, blonde hair unable to shine in the sun. A child her age should be up and about, not lying in bed all day and night.

Before he could give it much more thought, Kendall’s eyes eased open, a short gasp escaping her. “Am I dreaming?”

“No,” Robin chuckled. “No, love, I’m here.” He hadn’t time to stop her before she was up and wrestling with him, her thin arms nearly choking him as they encircled his neck. “Should I take this to mean you’re cured?”

Kendall snorted at him and pulled back to roll her eyes. When she spoke again, he could hear how rough her throat had gotten. “If only you had that sort of magic.”

“I brought a little with me,” he promised with a wink. “I think your grandmother should be taking care of it now. But!” He narrowed his eyes and straightened. “We have more important matters to attend to, don’t we?”

Kendall sat back and stiffened, holding her head high with a comically decisive nod.

“Now,” Robin growled, sounding for all the world like a general overseeing his army. “Have you been up to mischief? Yes or no?”

“Yes, sir!” Kendall assured him, clearing her throat once she’d announced this.

“I’ll be the judge of that,” Robin grunted and waved her off. “I’ll need a full report of said mischief.”

“Well,” Kendall replied haughtily. “The Sheriff and his men were here, not but last week. And when they turned their backs… I made faces.”

“Ha!” Robin grinned triumphantly. “Another battle won! Anything else?” This caused her to wilt, and Robin couldn’t help but follow suite. “Well, mischief isn’t everything. Silly faces are more than adequate.”

She brightened once more. “Does it really help?”

“More than you know,” Robin answered. “Winning a fight is all about heart, and yours is stronger and truer than anyone else’s.” He could hear Ruth by the meager stove, heating water, and the smell of herbs was already filling the room. “Has she eaten?”

“I’m right here,” Kendall laughed. “You can ask me.”

“Well, have you?” he asked, jabbing at her side with his finger.

She squealed and hopped, then composed herself enough to answer, “no.”

“Well, we’ll have to see to that. Come here.” He pulled her up into his lap and waved for Ruth to bring the mixture to him. It wasn’t quite soup or tea, but it would be flavorful enough, he hoped. Ruth passed him a bowl, warning that it was hot as he balanced both it and the girl leaning heavily into his chest.

As he was readying the spoon for her, Kendall asked, “Could you tell me a story?”

Robin frowned thoughtfully. “Something about me and my men, perhaps?” he ventured.

“I’ve heard all those. Grandma tells me them.”

“You don’t actually expect me to make something up?” Robin grunted.

“I thought they said you were clever,” Kendall countered, turning to smile up at him.

Robin glared. “For that, I will have to come up with something amazing.”

“Fine,” Kendall shrugged, then took her first bite with a wince, though she liked feeling it burn down her throat and ease the soreness as it went. “Something about a maiden.”

“All right.” He spooned up another bite as he considered this. “Once, there was a young maiden.”

“What did she look like?”

“Already you’re interrupting?” he laughed. “She had… long, blonde hair. And eyes like the newly green spring.”

“Was her name Kendall?”

Robin smirked at Ruth when she snickered lightly from across the room. “Could have been,” he answered, urging her to eat as he spoke. “At any rate, she was lively and lovely, and she adored exploring. Only she found herself lost one day, in the woods. She wandered for some time, passing all sorts of creatures, some good and some bad. She had to run from bears--”

“Was there a unicorn?” Kendall asked, gripping his arm with the sort of intensity that only an enrapt child can manage.

“Now that you mention it, yes,” he chirped. “And it came right to her, because she was so virtuous. But the unicorn didn’t know the way, so she had to move on without it. Luckily, a man crossed her path.”

“Was he a prince?” Kendall sighed.

“No,” Robin muttered, sounding bored with the idea. “All the princes in this kingdom were wicked.”

“Oh,” Kendall mused. “Then a knight?”

“Why a knight?” he asked in return.

“You’re a knight, kind of.”

Robin and Ruth met eyes at this, as if they’d both just caught on to something that made them realize this girl was growing up faster than they’d wagered. “Well,” he began carefully. “I’m not really a knight, sweetheart. I’m a thief.”

“Then she met a thief!” Kendall exclaimed. “A noble thief! And they lived happily ev--” She descended into a spell of coughing that caused Ruth to draw closer and pull the girl from Robin’s lap, propping her against the wall and offering her cooler water to drink until she calmed.

Once she was still, Robin waved Ruth away, his eyes seeming to say that he could handle this, that it was his place to. He went on spoon-feeding Kendall in silence until the bowl was empty, and he could sense a contentment in her that hadn’t been there when he’d first arrived.

“You aren’t going to finish the story?” Kendall asked softly when she felt the quiet had gone on too long.

“I believe you finished it for me,” Robin chuckled, then paused to chew his lip. “Although… you seem confused on a few fronts.”

“Like?” she volleyed back.

It was his place to build dreams, not shatter them, so he quickly shook his head. “Nothing that can’t wait for another time. I should be going.”

“You could take me with you,” Kendall huffed quickly, grabbing for his hand.

Robin hesitated and let her tug at him while he shook his head. “Sherwood is no place for you. You’re not well, and that would only make you worse.”

“I could help you,” Kendall pleaded, her eyes shining. “I want to. I want to fight the tyrant! I want to be amazing like you are and stay with you.”

This was certainly a little girl’s dream, despite how she might be falling in the kind of love he wouldn’t have expected of someone her age. He couldn’t deny that it made his heart glow to hear her hailing his exploits and wanting to assist. If only everyone could be as stouthearted as this tiny girl, they would have already defeated Prince John and be free.

“I’ll tell you what the best revenge is,” he said, leaning forward. “But it’s a secret, all right?”

Kendall nodded with wide eyes, awaiting his orders dutifully.

“Get well,” he whispered. “Grow strong and grow older. Find a man who works hard and loves you, and have lots of fat, healthy children. Trust me, that will show them.”

“Yes, sir,” Kendall whispered back. She shoved herself forward and kissed his cheek, causing him to blurt laughter, then laid down to rest. Apparently, her grandmother had already instructed her that rest would make her well, and with Robin’s orders, she was fully prepared to do so as much as possible.

Robin lingered at her bedside as she dozed off and was shaken from his reverie only when Ruth ran a hand over his hair. He jerked his attention to her, his expression so raw and affected that she almost couldn’t believe she was looking at the same man. Until he came back to himself and fixed his expression into one of neutrality again.

“She thinks the world of you,” Ruth murmured.

“So I’ve noticed,” Robin smirked. “Thinks too much of me, I think.”

“No one can think too much of you,” Ruth smiled. “Consider it a promise that her children will know your tale, her children’s children.”

He flinched at the idea, for it seemed far out of reach when Kendall was so ill. “You believe there will be such generations from her?”

“I’d not heard her cough so loose in days,” Ruth replied, and the hope in her voice was as real as the hand she placed on his shoulder. “I think that’s a promise now, too.”

With this, he rose and offered a quick goodbye, wishing to leave before he could reveal his misty eyes and thick voice. He did swear himself to bringing more medicine, to assuring that she was fully healed. Then he was off into cold and darkness again, and Ruth wanted to slap her own face for thinking that it felt warmer and brighter than it had. Yet if Robin had taught them anything, it was to hold onto that, to believe in miracles. How could she not when one had just walked out the door?

The End

1. How about a brief introduction?

Jade, that crazy chick who got the FR snowball rolling. I think you all know me fairly well by now. ;)

2. What got you into role playing?

I joined a little Star Wars themed forum called JediGirl. There was a prequel-based RPG going on, and after reading my way through the entries, I nervously built up the cajones to join in. Luckily, no one minded that even though I was a long-time writer, I was a first-time RPer, and thus it all began.

3. What kind of games do you tend to be drawn to?

As Ghani said, Fantasy and Sci-Fi. I don't like for the rules and regulations about what you can play to be too strict, because I love having enough room for movement and creativity. So I'm all about free form. Not to mention that I enjoy being around people who are like-minded and respectful.

4. Which one of your muses is a fan favorite and why do you think people think so?

Easy. Robin. Honestly? I can't say. Because he is an asshole, and he doesn't apologize for it. No, seriously, I understand. He's hot, heroic, a good guy deep down, and funny to boot. Diallo also seems fairly popular, and I think it's the line he walks between good and evil along with the coolness of his powers.

Back in the day, it was Jade. I used to get all kinds of people begging me to bring her into their games, and I played her for so long that I still don't quite have her out of my head.

5. What post/thread are you most proud of?

Now this is the hard question, because in this particular game? There is so much that I look at and feel awesome about. My characters have gotten wonderful opportunities to interact with others... I'm gonna cop out on this one. It's too difficult!

But I will backtrack to a past RP... When I played another character named Robin. She was a halfling and magician's apprentice to a young Merlin. And she had a monster crush on him. The ultimate moment in that RP for me was when she tried to save someone's life, ended up nearly killed in the process, and Merlin just about destroyed the world trying to save her. *heart flutters* That was so unexpected and beatifically awesome!

There was also... Lisa knows about this... Another Star Wars RP, this one set between AOTC and ROTS. I wrote Master Jade, and Lisa wrote her apprentice, Zahira. The way they bonded was really touching and incredible.

And lastly, so many of the epics I've written with Holiday. She seems to be the only person I can finish anything with, LOL!

6. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What aspects do you struggle with?

Most days? Easy. Uh-oh. Watch it turn out I just jinxed myself. ;)

When I get in tune with a character, chances are they won't shut up until I wrote their story. That's why I end up talking ABOUT them so much when I'm not writing them. Because I understand their motivations down to the last letter, and they are jabbering at me, and all that energy has to go somewhere. So sometimes it's too easy, and I fear I am driving people insane with how much I want to write. :p

7. Do you tend to use the same PB again and again? Is the character different each time, or the same one tweaked slightly to for each game?

Well, not so much anymore. I used to use Gillian Anderson a lot, but now I have basically paired her up with my Jedi character and don't feel right using her again. So now, I try to find a different one every time, though it's not unheard of for me to repeat a PB. And if I do repeat, the character is usually unique from the last one.

8. Write a few sentences on your favorite muse or pairing.

Wow... Just a few? Fine. But I'm gonna cheat and talk about them ALL.

Robin... What do I say about him? After bringing him around as a lark because the stroke of inspiration was just too good to ignore, he has taken over as my main. He constantly astounds me, partly with the things that are wrong with him and partly with the things that are so damn right. He's one of those that when I do manage to entertain the thought of killing off a character, he could NEVER be on that list. As for him and Marian... I hope it really does happen and I'm not just on crack.

Diallo is fucked up, and people love him, and I love that. And he ends up loving people that make me go O_o.

PUP! Why is Pup next? I dunno. This is in no particular order. He just popped into my head. He does that. And I guess that's why I love him.

Rodney needs to deal with his shit. Because it's starting to drive even me insane. But Anika is helping a lot! <3

Lorelai will be more fun once I get her in place where I want her. I keep thinking that and pushing for it.

Beau is still a bit of a mystery to me. It's hard taking over someone else's character, but I do love him and want to do more with him. Just what, I haven't decided.

Alice and White... I have to list them together because of how inseparable they are. You can't have one without the other. She was my first FR character, the one that started it all. And two seconds later, I thought that White needed to be her companion. See? Meant to be.

Yancy... OMG he hates me. Because I hurt him. And he is dying to be written more. Again, a lark that has become so fucking important to me!

Thora, last but not least. Some days I think I have her all figured out, and others I feel like I'm still getting to know her. She is my mystery sometimes. And Ambrose is not making things any easier.

9. Do you have any big pet peeves when it comes to RP?

Again, I'm with Ghani on this one. People that can't stick with the story. I've had too many RPs die because people just left without warning. They just stopped writing, no excuses or goodbyes. I also hate the one-sentence-writers. I've had to deal with those, too. They want me to carry the story, even though I can't write their character. Fucking stupid.

10. Are you guilty of any of the pet peeves you hate?

I hope not. I try to be faithful and write when I'm not busy, and I warn when I won't be there to do so. I also warn when my posts are short and explain that I'm waiting for a reaction from the other character, but I NEVER post just one sentence.

11. What was the first game you joined? Fandom, Original, or Celeb?

Star Wars!

12. Name your favorite muse and what it is about them that you love to write.

Not really a fair question... What, do you want them to attack me and kill me in my sleep?

13. What would you call your writing style?

Post-modern bullshit. BWAHAHAHAHA! What the fuck, I mean really? I haven't even thought about it. I'm not that pretentious, I hope.

14. Do you have a set group of people you tend to RP with? If so, what is it about them that makes you stick around?

Right now? You all! :) Because you have the same goals in mind, basically, and are constantly inspiring me. Not just with new ideas, but to try and be a better writer.

15. Name one thing/character you'd love to write/pick up but have been too afraid or shy to do.

I think I have fulfilled all my FR dreams so far, hehe. I've not really balked at anything because of fear or shyness.

16. Do you feel uncomfortable taking criticism? Or worse, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?

Most of the time. Because I get my feelings hurt easily. That's no one's fault but my own. Then again, people over the internet are shitty, so I may be a little justified.

17. When you write, is there anything that helps?

Ghani needs to stop answering how I would answer... Music is a huge help. I find it entirely TOO inspiring.

18. What inspires you?

Other authors, music (again with that), TV, movies, my own characters... Everything?

19. Lastly, how would you sum up your RP experiences and you as a writer?

Mixed. I've written with people I now feel comfortable calling lifelong friends, even family. And I have RPed with people that thinking about them even now makes me want to choke them. But every experience has helped me grow, so I can't regret any of it, not even the bad parts.

20. Tag some friends, because they'll hate you for it.

If it feels good, do it!

You are a Mystic Theurge!

Score! You have a prestige class. A prestige class can only be taken after you've fulfilled certain requirements. This may mean that you're an exceptionally talented person, but it probably doesn't.

The Mystic Theurge is a combination of a cleric and a mage. They can cast both arcane and divine spells, and are good at both, making them pretty terrifying on the battlefield. They have more raw spellpower than just about any other class.

You're both intelligent and faithful, but not violent or deceitful. I guess that makes you a pretty good person.

Take The RPG Class Test at HelloQuizzy

That's about right! Those are the kinds of classes I always lean toward. Even the characters I write tend to end up with powers like that, a balance of arcane and divine... That rocks. Hehe!
