I'm quite used to the fact now that most other mums I meet find me different or outright weird, but sometimes I still get surprised by how fiercely some of them insist on their practice being the only holy truth that needs to be followed in order to raise normal kids....

Yesterday I happened to talk to another mom from the pre-school my daughter goes to and we chatted for a while. She told me how much her daughter liked the music their pre-school group did their "carnival" dance to, and asked me if I had that particular CD, or any good kiddie-CD. I had to tell her I detested that particular CD (which is otherwise fairly popular among little kids and their parents) and that I only have my old cassettes (from my childhood) and some English-language kids' songs CDs, but most of the time we listen to music that I prefer. She must have taken this as an insult, because she ranted out :" Don't you know that kids need kiddie-music and not your stupid pop/rock faves and foreign stuff? How do you expect your children to appreciate good music if you don't expose them to age-appropriate quality input??? " ...and so on.... I admit I worked myself up a bit on that. The previously mentioned popular kids' CD she adored is just CRAP! Awful canned music with just as awful songs sung by an absolutely tasteless animated baby girl.... I thought, does she honestly think THAT is quality music?! And what the heck do we consider age-appropriate??? Is there such thing as age-appropriate music? I'd say there isn't....
I was stupid enough to not only think but utter these thoughts. I guess the -by then quite fierce- lady would've literally jumped down on my throat, had I not mentioned that we do listen to classical music with the kids. That cooled her down a bit, only to make her feel it necessary to inform me about the superiority of classical music over modern bullsh*t (as she called it). Luckily, we had to put an end to the convo at that point for lack of time. One thing I still can't get is why The Four Seasons or any symphony/opera/etc is more kids' music than this one for example...
Good we didn't have more time to talk, and good I didn't tell her about my newest favourite, Aaron Razel (who sings mostly in Hebrew)because I bet she would've tried to scare me that listening to such a foreign language would interfere with my poor little kids' proper language acquisition....
