In fact, I never really checked how other national TV channels do their new year's eve programme, but we always have a countdown sort of thing at midnight when the national anthem is sung (broadcast from a theatre or the studio or else).
Right after midnight there used to come a speech by Árpád Göncz, president of the republic. I greatly admire that man for all he has done, he is the wisest politician I've ever seen, very smart, determined, but at the same time kind and understanding. He is also a writer and translator. I used to listen to his speeches very often, as I liked the way he spoke to the people of the country he loved and cared for, even though this country was not always kind to him.
Unfortunately, time flies and he was followed first by Ferenc Mádl, and now we have László Sólyom as the head of state. He also gives a speech on the first day of the new year, but I've never listened to him for more than a minute. I don't often say I hate a person, but I just cannot feel even neutral about him.
Dear Uncle Göncz (as many of your fans call you) I miss you!
