kids' music

I'm quite used to the fact now that most other mums I meet find me different or outright weird, but sometimes I still get surprised by how fiercely some of them insist on their practice being the only holy truth that needs to be followed in order to raise normal kids....

Yesterday I happened to talk to another mom from the pre-school my daughter goes to and we chatted for a while. She told me how much her daughter liked the music their pre-school group did their "carnival" dance to, and asked me if I had that particular CD, or any good kiddie-CD. I had to tell her I detested that particular CD (which is otherwise fairly popular among little kids and their parents) and that I only have my old cassettes (from my childhood) and some English-language kids' songs CDs, but most of the time we listen to music that I prefer. She must have taken this as an insult, because she ranted out :" Don't you know that kids need kiddie-music and not your stupid pop/rock faves and foreign stuff? How do you expect your children to appreciate good music if you don't expose them to age-appropriate quality input??? " ...and so on.... I admit I worked myself up a bit on that. The previously mentioned popular kids' CD she adored is just CRAP! Awful canned music with just as awful songs sung by an absolutely tasteless animated baby girl.... I thought, does she honestly think THAT is quality music?! And what the heck do we consider age-appropriate??? Is there such thing as age-appropriate music? I'd say there isn't....
I was stupid enough to not only think but utter these thoughts. I guess the -by then quite fierce- lady would've literally jumped down on my throat, had I not mentioned that we do listen to classical music with the kids. That cooled her down a bit, only to make her feel it necessary to inform me about the superiority of classical music over modern bullsh*t (as she called it). Luckily, we had to put an end to the convo at that point for lack of time. One thing I still can't get is why The Four Seasons or any symphony/opera/etc is more kids' music than this one for example...
<lj-embed id="3" />
Good we didn't have more time to talk, and good I didn't tell her about my newest favourite, Aaron Razel (who sings mostly in Hebrew)because I bet she would've tried to scare me that listening to such a foreign language would interfere with my poor little kids' proper language acquisition....

I more or less understand and accept the anomalies in yesterday's run and the weird feeling they resulted in, but since then those could've been gone with the wind. Just on the contrary, I've been experiencing a rather strange condition. I haven't slept for more than 45 hours now, which is quite much, given that I ran around 12K on Saturday, spent Sunday morning running up and about with doggies at the local dog-school(drove 30K to and fro) then the afternoon basically the same, just with kids, the evening(night) with some work, some more browsing, and even more chatting with friends online. What's even more unusual is that I do not feel sleepy, not in the least. I guess I could sleep if I put myself into bed, I just don't feel the need for it, nor do I get the well-known OMG-my-head-soon-falls-down-on-my-desk feeling. Don't understand.
*puzzled look*

If that wasn't enough in itself, i still don't feel the urge to eat some normal (nutritious, healthy, human) food, either. Since the pasta I had quite some time after Saturdays run, I have only had some chicken-soup and a small bar of choc. I did drink a lot ( water and some fruit tea), though.
*even more puzzled look+rolling eyes*

Now as I'm sitting here wide awake, I'm toying with the thought of an experiment on myself, checking where my sleep deprivation limit is. That is, how long my body and mind (yep, it's the brain that gives-up soon after the 50hour mark) can endure staying awake. I'm not gonna try it now most probably, since I have the kids, whom I need to take proper care of during the day, take my daughter to preschool in the morning and go back for her in the afternoon, prepare lunch, etc And not even hubby will be here tomorrow . So off to bed with me, whatever the outcome.

a run

I was left home alone today which simply called for a great and possibly longish run: no complaining hubby or kids around, not too bad weather, free time YAY!

It wasn't too cold, maybe around 10 degrees(Celsius), rather wet and muddy, but that's ok for me...

So off I went on what I expected to be a fabulous run.I took my smallest doggie with me and she enjoyed every minute of it! :)

I was out for a bit longer than an hour which -given my usual out-of-training pace - must have meant something like 12K (I don't know exactly, because I ran around the town(village) and the surrounding forest but in a zig-zag fashion.I enjoyed it tremendously! However, I did feel a bit bad about my body being so out-of-training. I know I can run faster, more at ease, but since I've been out only once in a while lately, I cannot hope for anything better. I passed an elderly lady on bike and she murmured "Don't you have anything more useful to do?" I quickly looked around if there were any other people around, but couldn't see anyone, so she must have been talking to me. I kept my opinion to myself. As I was passing a pub I got the remark I almost every time get from half-drunk men(when I'm with a dog) " Nice bitch! The dog's not bad, either..." Interestingly enough, no one ever says a word when I'm with my huge, bear-like sarplaninac-mix dog....:)
I thought all ice and snow was gone by now, but I was wrong. The second half of my run took me in the forest where the path was covered in icy-snowy mud. I wished I'd had yaktrax.... I managed somehow without falling, but the slipping and bouncing took all of my energy. I know it by now that when cold starts to shiver down from the top of my head, all the way down on the back of the head and the spine, that's when my body has used up most of its fuel and I'm running out of energy very soon. Luckily, I could hold on until I got back home :)
After a shower and several glasses of orange-carrot juice, I'm having a sort of a runners' high, dancing in my seat in front of the computer at the moment.

Unfortunately, this is not the whole story. Something happened that made 40 minutes of it into a little nightmare.
Now I guess the whole misery resulted from me not eating properly yesterday and today. Yesterday I only realized around noon that hadn't had anything except for two cups of coffee with milk.(in fact, I've been generally drinking more coffee lately than I should....) Then I had a moderate lunch, but that was all for the rest of the day. Today I've been alone, and when I'm alone I usually forget about eating. I had some coffee in the morning and a sandwich sometime around noon. The result? At around 20minutes into my run I got an awful stomach cramp with the pain soon creeping on to everything in the abdominal region. For a few minutes I thought I'd better stop, but then went on, trying not to concentrate on the pain and hoping it would cease. It did,if not at all cease but lessen about 40 minutes later, when I was almost back home anyway. It got much better after drinking something, though. Now, I'm sorta fine, but still cannot think of eating real food. At first, I thought I was stupid for not taking any drink with me (which is partly true), however, I never needed any fluid intake during runs on this distance, in such moderate and wet weather. So, now I'm here, clueless. Maybe it's just lack of proper training...

On Wednesday evenings (and also on Fridays) I go to a crap computer course. Yesterday my dad came to babysit, and since he could come in the morning I decided to go and sort out some things for which I needed to go in to the city(Budapest in my case). I could not get everything I wanted, but had a funny incident: I was wandering in front of one of the greatest (or THE greatest?) synagogues in town, when the security guard thought I was with the group awaiting there - a huge group of mixed nationality, but English-speaking tourists- and he showed me the way in. I was stupid enough to tell him I wasn't with the group. I realized immediately afterwards, that I might have gotten in free! Oh, how stupid of me!

I was also mistaken for a tourist in two shops I entered! As the shop assistants greeted me in heavily accented English, I felt a bit naughty and answered in English, too. It was fun!

In fact, I never really checked how other national TV channels do their new year's eve programme, but we always have a countdown sort of thing at midnight when the national anthem is sung (broadcast from a theatre or the studio or else).

<lj-embed id="1" />

Right after midnight there used to come a speech by Árpád Göncz, president of the republic. I greatly admire that man for all he has done, he is the wisest politician I've ever seen, very smart, determined, but at the same time kind and understanding. He is also a writer and translator. I used to listen to his speeches very often, as I liked the way he spoke to the people of the country he loved and cared for, even though this country was not always kind to him.

Unfortunately, time flies and he was followed first by Ferenc Mádl, and now we have László Sólyom as the head of state. He also gives a speech on the first day of the new year, but I've never listened to him for more than a minute. I don't often say I hate a person, but I just cannot feel even neutral about him.

Dear Uncle Göncz (as many of your fans call you) I miss you!

I just adore MÁV (Hungarian Railways)!
One evening recently I was coming home from school, which is just about 15 km away( 4 stops, about 10 min). And where's the problem- you may ask now. Here: because of the new, revised schedule I had to change trains twice! Jumped on a train at 8pm., got off at the first stop(the train does not go any further), had to wait until 8:30 for the other train that took me another stop(that again, did not go further), waiting , another train came at 8:52 two more stops. So I managed to do 15 km in one hour(could've run the distance in 1:20 baah)
