PERSONALITY:
Aurora’s best and worst qualities are really two sides of the same coin. Her careless self-confidence is an asset to her, she rarely doubts her own abilities or charms but it all too easily blends into arrogance. No matter what the task, she is convinced she is best suited for it. An optimist at heart, Aurora is able to take bad news with a shrug and a firm belief that things will end up all right in the end. In any situation, she tends to believe the most hopeful outcome is also the most likely. She is a hedonist and seems to take great pleasure out of life, finding it difficult to say no to any temptation. While not exactly a loose cannon, Aurora certainly does not have the calm, patient temperament one would want in a leader.
Her most obvious virtue, if one can count it as that, is her honesty. Aurora will always tell you why your gown is out of fashion or why a particular fight pattern is hopelessly impractical. Tact does not count as a virtue for Aurora, nor does pretending to have virtues one does not possess. Towards her superiors and people she stands to gain from she masks this characteristic lack of diplomacy out of necessity, but everyone else can rely on hearing exactly what is on her mind. She does not mean to come off as supercilious exactly; she simply sees no reason to hide her opinions. She may sulk or complain, but rarely will she nurse a secret resentment or grudge. In general, she forgives easily, her anger disappearing as suddenly as it appeared and soon forgotten.
HISTORY:
Aurora had quite the unorthodox upbringing. Her father and mother masqueraded as entertainers but scamming was how they earned most of the funds to support their family. Both were from respectable families, particularly her mother, but they had fallen on hard times after her father invested heavily in a failed development project. From an early age, she was enlisted in many of these schemes as well as their legitimate dealings as performers. The family’s fortunes varied wildly from month to month or even day-to-day. At times Aurora would be doted upon and dressed in fanciful dresses, at others she would have to steal just to pay her father's creditors. This bohemian existence was happy enough, and Aurora enjoyed the somewhat haphazard education she received and intriguing people her travels brought her into contact with. She showed a natural aptitude to languages and began studying flight from her father—a onetime commercial pilot—while still a young girl.
Tragedy struck in quick succession. She found herself at seventeen orphaned when both of her parents succumbed within days of each other to a viral outbreak while on a far-flung planet. Short of funds and grieving this loss, she tried to find employment there but soon discovered that her childhood had left her with few marketable skills. She could pass herself off as a member of the social elite if needed and was clever enough when it came to schemes, but neither of these abilities was helpful for long on an undeveloped planet. After a year of scraping out a miserable existence there dealing in scrap parts, she managed to earn enough money to purchase passage on a ship to a more developed area.
Aurora is nothing if not a survivor and would never let mere social mores or squeamishness get in the way of making a tidy profit. She had no patience for missishness and certainly did not fancy becoming a servant. Originally turning to petty crime and using her unusual background to provide a front of respectability, she eventually settled on the goal of becoming a pilot as a more lucrative--and exciting--way to turn a profit. She is something of a thrill-seeker and finds life among the stars and constant travel to be the height of happiness. While Aurora might sound like a member of the upper classes at times, she feels far more at home in the rough world of space travel. |
