Earlier today, we took our cans in for recycling. It's an especially pretty day, with blue skies and warm sunshine. We managed to get a half gallon of milk, some half&half, and some butter withour spoils.
I am amazed sometimes at how M can "hold court" in virtually any social situation. It didn't take him long to do so while waiting in line to cash in our cans. Various subjects were debated, including the evil of banks, Obama, and the oligarchy. At some point a couple of ladies brought in Christian religion; M managed to scare one half to death by pointing out that Allah is Arabic for "The Lord", showing that Muslims follow the same god as do Christians and Jews.
One guy seemed miffed about M stealing the thunder, and kept bringing up Obama's birth certificate and how some people still question whether he was a natural born American. M put an end to the argument, not once but twice, by telling him that nobody gets into the Oval Office without the oligarchy approving them. The guy was still muttering a little bit as he left after cashing in his cans.
I sat in the truck, people-watching, and soaking up the sunshine. I've since been out on the porch several times, doing the same thing. I also availed myself of some 70% cacao dark chocolate, which definitely improved my mood. Lastly, my littlest and youngest cat, Isis, has graced my desktop with her killer-cute little thumbs. She's washed my face, purred up a storm, and generally did her magic on my mood.
M has felt himself "drawn" to occasionally massage my shoulders and neck; unfortunately, I have a lot of pain stored there, so he can't do it for long before his hands start absorbing it. He then has to go wash them to "wash off" the pain.
All in all, I found some things today to be truly grateful for. I have a home. While our selection is limited, I have food. I have M. I have my furbabies. I have my friends, near and far. I have a vehicle that is in good shape. Physically, I am at a minimum of pain, and I have some energy.
Today is a good day, even if everything isn't totally "right" with the world.

I am in such a foul mood right now; I don't think I've been in this foul a mood in a very long while. Part of it is hormonal, but most of it is thanks to the stupid bank. It also doesn't make me feel any better to have LiveJournal responding like its routers are mired in fucking molasses....
( Cut so you can skip all this if you want )

Katrina's Hidden Race War
Body of Evidence
I know this isn't the first time most have heard about the racist goings-on in New Orleans and thereabouts after Katrina, and it's likely not the last time you'll hear about it, either.
I am also reminded of the fact that we have far more black folk behind bars than white.
When is the generational racism going to stop, people? In case you haven't been paying attention, the world is getting more "colorful" by the second. A truly "white" face is a minority in the world. You are hardly superior to anyone else.
Many of you identify as Christian. It is a known fact that your savior, Jesus Christ, could NOT have been a white man. His parents weren't white, nobody living in that area was white. He was an Arab by descent, so there's no way he was white. In fact, it could be said that every time you discriminate against a non-white, you are discriminating against the very man you hold in the highest honor.
Every single human being on this earth is a cousin to everyone else. Did you even realize this? It can be proven by simple genetics. No "race" of people remains unrelated to another. If you still don't believe me, research something called "pedigree collapse".
That means you're related to those that you hate because of the amount of melanin in their skin.
You wouldn't dream of discriminating against, say, your brother or sister (discounting interfamilial drama), would you? What about your second, third, fourth cousins? What if it could be proven that the black man down the street that you hate so much is genetically your 30th cousin? What would you have to say, then?
How many of you run out to get a tan every summer? Do you realize the pigment that makes YOU look "colorful" is the SAME pigment that makes your black (or American Indian or etc.) neighbor look like they do, ALL the time?
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO STOP JUDGING PEOPLE BY THE ACTION OF A SIMPLE CHEMICAL IN THE SKIN?
It's so stupid, it makes me spit.
I read
alobar's journal. Recently, he posted about the race-related injustices in New Orleans - or should I say he has all along, but I am referring to a recent post where a couple of anonymous dipshits decided to show their hate. Let me quote one:
"i hope them niggers pound your ass a few times there. you such a nigger lover. there is still a buch in houston and elsewhere commiting crimes that should go back to NOLA. hell if you like em so much they should send a bunch more there from detroit, NJ, chicago, etc."
Not only is this thoroughly ignorant, it shows a decided lack of education in its composition.
Should we blame a lack of education for racism? I think not. Even
if school systems "down south" aren't as good as those in other areas of the country, the movement to eradicate racism has been going on for decades, and nobody can say they haven't heard about it.
I was brought up by a mother who judged people on their
actions - not their skin color. That upbringing did pay off. My first supervisor when I joined the USAF was a black man. I realized just how "colorblind" I really was one day when the idea of blushing came up, and I suddenly realized I couldn't tell if he was blushing, or not!
In fact, I could be considered to be a non-white. The Magyars of Hungary certainly weren't white by most people's definition, and they're in my family tree. I also have Jewish blood in me in the same matrilineal line. Many Celtic tribes would fit the frame of "non-white" as well, and they're in my family tree.
It's time to cut out the bullshit. We're all the same species. As I said recently to
alobar, we have to have a Renaissance of love and compassion if we are to survive.
The first step is discarding useless hatred.
